SUBJECT-SPECIFIC FACILITIES We have incredible professional training kitchens used by the likes of Michel Roux Jr to find his yearly scholar, while our multi-million pound Food Science and Innovation Suite provides cutting- edge research equipment. Our AA award-winning fine dining restaurant and bistro on campus also provide the ideal environment to hone your chef and hospitality skills and gain experience serving real customers. You will have the opportunity to learn from some of the best chefs in the industry, in facilities to match. GRADUATE CAREERS Our graduates have built very successful careers in a wide range of industry sectors including fine dining, new product development and contract catering, while others have started their own businesses in areas such as specialist food production, consultancy and licensed retail. Completing this course will enable you to pursue many different career paths, including: • Fine dining • Product and menu development • Food service management • Managing catering operations • Food journalism Graduates who wish to continue their studies can progress to postgraduate level courses available at University College Birmingham, the University of Birmingham or elsewhere.
A one-year placement in the culinary arts industry is an integral part of this degree, greatly enhancing your employment prospects by giving you significant work experience before you graduate. Reflecting the University’s reputation with industry on a global scale, previous placements have included the White Barn Inn and Spa (USA), Wickaninnish Inn (Canada), Claridge’s (London), Une Table au Sud (Marseille, France) and Ashford Castle (Ireland) PRACTICAL APPLICATION In addition to placement, there is an enormous variety of other exciting opportunities to put your training into practice, such as working on new food products with major companies like Mars, gaining experience at Michelin-starred local restaurants and working hands-on in our training restaurants on campus ENRICHMENT Your studies will be supplemented by a variety of visits and masterclasses, while if you want the chance to really put your skills to the test, there is a wide range of culinary competitions available for you to enter. Our students and graduates have enjoyed an outstanding track record, from our five triumphant teams at the Nestlé Professional Toque d’Or to the British Culinary Federation’s Young Chef of the Year and countless other award winners
