PROTECTING THE PLANET

Environmental sustainability is one of the most pressing issues for our global society today, and universities, which have multiple campuses and thousands of students, must play their part in reducing emissions and waste. HOWWE ARE DOING OUR BIT

From culinary arts management to business and tourism, we support sustainability-focused modules within courses, wherever possible. And within our College of Food and Hospitality Management, we hold development days with themes such as ‘Creativity with Leftovers’ to drive more sustainable practices in the catering sector. We also support the growing number of Guild clubs and societies with a 'green' focus, from the Eco Society to our Vegan and Vegetarian Society.

At University College Birmingham, we take sustainability very seriously and have put in place ways of working that make much more efficient use of resources and ensure the goods and services we source leave the smallest carbon footprint. By partnering with a local company, all of our campus waste is either recycled or processed into energy to assist in providing electricity to around 30,000 local homes within the county, ensuring that all campus waste is completely carbon neutral. This is one example of our ongoing strategies to achieve a 34% reduction in carbon emissions in the forthcoming years. Our buildings are also designed to be as energy efficient as possible. Our new Moss House, for example, features designated electric vehicle charging points, photovoltaic solar panels, recycling stations, smart lighting, sensor and timer taps to minimise water waste and a landscaped biodiverse courtyard. We also provide plant-based compostable cutlery in our take-out eateries and provide students with incentives and discounts for using their own hot drink cups to help them to be greener. We also support university and community sustainability drives and activities, including Brum Goes Green Week and our own sustainability fairs.
