“Four words to describe my course? A creative artist’s dream.” And what a journey it’s been for Stephanie, who not only won a haul of national awards while at University College Birmingham, but was picked from 2,000 hopefuls to appear on BBC TV show Glow Up: Britain’s Next Make-Up Star, fronted by Stacey Dooley MBE. Her ‘pinch yourself’ moments included doing Chizzy from Holby City’s make-up for the TV Choice Awards and a prosthetics challenge at the Harry Potter studios in London. With the show now streaming on Netflix, Stephanie took the opportunity to venture into feature films. She did the prosthetics, make-up and hair effects on horror flick The Exorcism of Karen Walker while she also designed, prepped and executed make-up and hair for a whole cast and multiple days of filming on a National Lottery-funded film. Hugely popular on Instagram, she has also collaborated with platforms such as TikTok as an influencer, performing tutorials that will be seen worldwide from this year, and is a magazine contributor and column writer. Most excitingly, Stephanie, who graduated with a first-class degree in 2019, has landed a deal to take an idea she designed for the Innovations module of her course to market. “I am liaising with a well-known make-up company that is helping me through the process of making my product and getting it on the shelves,” she said. “I’ve had interest from top artists, including a guest judge on Glow Up, to test and promote my product, as well as from my professional peers.” She said she couldn’t have got there without University College Birmingham. “The sheer opportunities we had at the University were absolutely phenomenal,” she said. “I’m enjoying my career journey so much, it truly has been a humbling and amazing ride so far.” Stephanie Harrison Award-winning make-up artist and TV star Specialist Hair and Media Make-up BA (Hons) OUR STUDENTS
