OUR STUDENTS Jordan Broome 200m sprinter for Great Britain and England Athletics Sport and Fitness Studies BA (Hons) Birmingham’s long-awaited Commonwealth Games are just around the corner, and one local sporting starlet has set his sights on bagging a chance to battle with the world’s best at the prestigious contest. Keep your eyes out for University College Birmingham student Jordan Broome. The promising young sprinter has already represented Great Britain on the track at the FISU World University Games, reaching the 200m final in Napoli in 2019, as well as racing for England Athletics. And there could be many bigger and better things yet to come – not least the potential prospect of performing in front of a home crowd right here in Birmingham. “It would be a big achievement, running at the Commonwealth Games here,” said Jordan, who balances his training with studying for a BA (Hons) Sport and Fitness Studies degree at University College Birmingham. “I’ve just got to stay grounded and keep working hard.” Studying his course has had its competitive advantages too – from gaining insight into sports psychology to receiving funding towards warm weather training in Tenerife as a member of the University’s Sporting Excellence Scholarship scheme. “I was out there for ten days, working on the track, in the gym and doing lots of technical work,” he said. “Plus being in an environment like that where there are lots of other high class sprinters pushes you along. “I chose the course because I could relate it to what I do with my athletics,” he added. “The staff make it enjoyable and have helped me when I have needed time with my athletics too. “I’ve gained knowledge about my sport and it’s a good course with many pathways. Since I started here, I haven’t looked back.”
