Completing a culinary college course in his home city of Mumbai, Afroz was keen to expand on his skills overseas. Searching for the right course, he was introduced to a representative of University College Birmingham, who talked Afroz through the degrees which could help him fulfil his dream The course offered modules such as Rooms Revenue Management and Management of Food and Beverage Operations, as well as the prospect of a year-long placement in year two that would enable him to rise up into a managerial role. He was also drawn to the emphasis on building practical skills and the fact that the course was accredited by the University of Birmingham. Once enrolled, University College Birmingham’s International team made his transition from India to the UK easy, from helping to sort out his finances to securing his accommodation in our halls of residence at Cambrian Hall. As for living in Birmingham, Afroz – who works part-time at award-winning Asha’s Indian restaurant five minutes’ walk from the University – couldn’t be happier. “Birmingham is a multicultural city and inexpensive compared with other cities in the UK and we get to interact with lots of international students,” he said. “For many students, like me, English is not their first language, but after joining the University, you can visit the Academic Skills Centre to get help with your assignments and polish up on your English skills. “From childhood, I dreamed of becoming a good businessman and now, I am on the right track. It is wonderful to study here. The University has a great reputation inside and outside the country and I would recommend it if you are looking to study for a degree in the UK.” of running his own restaurant one day.
