You will also have the chance to work in our state- of-the-art Food Science and Innovation Suite, which features two specialist bakeries, a bespoke sensory evaluation room, a pilot plant and science facilities, while our Cakes and Bakes shop on campus sells a wide range of bread and baked goods made by our students. GRADUATE CAREERS This is an ideal qualification to help you launch a career in the bakery, patisserie and confectionery industry, as well as providing an excellent foundation for you to start your own business. You will be able to work in a wide range of organisations and areas including: • Artisan bakery • Confectionery and chocolate • Food technology • New product development • Technical management or quality assurance • Specialist food production • Bakery or patisserie Graduates who wish to continue their studies can progress to postgraduate level courses available at University College Birmingham, the University of Birmingham or elsewhere.
As part of the course, you are encouraged to undertake work placements (minimum 3 weeks or 120 hours, in years one and two) to give you vital first-hand experience and insight of working in a real industry environment. Previous placements have included British Bakels, Claridge’s (London), Zeelandia, Fine Lady Bakery and Hobbs House Bakery, home of the Fabulous Baker Brothers ENRICHMENT You will have great opportunities to prove your abilities and showcase your talent through a number of industry competitions during your course. Our excellent partnerships with bakery and confectionery organisations also enhance your studies by offering unique access to industry professionals through guest lectures and visits, including the likes of Callebaut, Fermex, Mondelēz, Delifrance, Heygates, DuPont/Danisco, the British Society of Baking (BSB) and the Alliance for Bakery Students and Trainees (ABST) INDUSTRY APPROVED University College Birmingham is a member of The National Skills Academy for Food and Drink, while we also work closely with the Worshipful Company of Bakers, ensuring your learning is kept up-to-date with the latest techniques and developments used in the industry SUBJECT-SPECIFIC FACILITIES We have our own on-site baking and product development laboratories stocked with specialist equipment, from dough rheology testing equipment and the latest industrial ovens to vacuum mixers and specialist chocolate production and tempering equipment.
