BIRMINGHAM: A BUZZING CITY Studying at University College Birmingham means being right at the heart of one of the most dynamic cities in the UK.

Less than an hour-and-a-half from London with major rail and bus stations just minutes from our campuses, Birmingham is a buzzing city where nearly 40% of the population is under the age of 25. A rapidly growing business centre with outstanding connections throughout the country, there is no shortage of nightlife, restaurants, bars and coffee shops, cultural attractions, parks and entertainment right on your doorstep. For everything a student wants, there’s no place better than ‘Brum’. THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS Love the bright lights and bustle? You’ll feel right at home here in England’s second city. Birmingham boasts hundreds of restaurants, a host of clubs and bars, famous festivals, waterside attractions, and major entertainment venues welcoming some of the biggest shows and stars on the planet. But if you want to get away from it all, you can always escape into Birmingham’s 8,000 acres of parks and open spaces, or explore over 100 miles of canals around the city – reputedly even more than Venice. And with excellent transport links in all directions, you’re never far away from breaking out into the countryside and beyond.

BIG BRANDS TO INDIE INNOVATORS If you’re a shopaholic, Birmingham’s got you covered. All the big brands you know and love are here, set in spectacular centres like the Bullring, Grand Central and The Mailbox, all offering a fantastic shopping experience. But there’s also plenty to make the city unique, with a thriving independent scene and countless hidden gems to discover in amazing locations like The Custard Factory and Great Western Arcade. Celebrate the city’s stunning street food culture – you can’t beat Digbeth Dining Club – wrap yourself in independent fashion or surround your student pad with unique homeware. And if you’re an aspiring entrepreneur, it’s the perfect place to start up your own independent business.

AND FINALLY… ENSURE YOU’RE PREPARED If you’re sharing a bathroom, bring flip flops! Trust us. FOR LIVING IN HALLS By the UCBloggers

DON’T FEAR THE KITCHEN You may very well have never cooked for yourself before. If not, you can’t beat a good student cookbook such as Student Eats: Fast, Cheap, Healthy – the best tried-and- tested recipes for students by Rachel Phipps, or SORTED: A Recipe for Student Survival by the Sorted YouTube channel, founded by University College Birmingham graduate Ben Ebbrell. Also, save money by cooking together. SHY? TRY NOT TO HIDE AWAY While it’s tempting to hide away on that first day, try and pluck up the courage to leave your door open. Someone is bound to stick their head around to say hello and as millions of graduates across the world will verify, it could be the start of a life-long friendship. At the very least, it’s someone to pop down the pub or coffee shop with, getting your social life at university underway! You may initially find it hard to manage your money at university. It’s tempting to splash the cash when your loan drops into your account, especially with Amazon only a click away. However, when you are living off baked beans, you might regret it. Make your cash last and keep your NUS card with you to make the most of discounts. BE THRIFTY – BUY SECOND-HAND Don’t be afraid to be thrifty and buy second- hand books and clothes. Yes, it’s great to have the latest gear, but it can be expensive and when it comes to books, why pay through the nose when you can buy a book from a former student for a fraction of the price? Also, you can make extra cash by selling them when you fancy or need something new. MONEY, MONEY, MONEY – MUST BE FUNNY

WORKING WITH INDUSTRY

Work placements are vital for gaining real-life experience and building your confidence and skill set. As many of our students discover, they can also lead to a job on graduation. POWERFUL PLACEMENTS FOR REAL EXPERIENCE

Whether a week-long or a year, compulsory or optional, we work with over 1,000 employers to find our students the right placements for them.

Voted Placement Student of the Year 2019, Hospitality Business Management student Jerome Anderson completed a year-long placement at the four-star Crowne Plaza hotel in the heart of Birmingham. He was then offered two roles in the industry. Here’s what Crowne Plaza management had to say: “Jerome always pushes himself to learn and develop in his position. He has an amazing personality that is shown in the way he works with the team and speaks to the guests. He represents our two biggest values; passion and integrity.” Culinary Arts Management student Joshua Topkar secured a placement at Dunboyne Castle Hotel and Spa in Ireland with the help of the hired@UCB team. He said: “This was my first time working as a chef, so I gained a lot of practical and theoretical skills. Plus, I learned how to work in a functioning kitchen.”

More than 20 Specialist Hair and Media Make-up degree students worked with BMOS – Birmingham’s oldest and largest operatic society – for their summer production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Alexandra Theatre, taking care of the hair and make-up through to sculpting and casting prosthetic noses for the dastardly Child Catcher. Miriam Bibi, one of the students involved, said: “I was assigned to do the hair for the main character, Truly Scrumptious, and just working with the actress was such a pleasure. FIND YOUR CONFIDENCE We want to help you stand out in your industry. ON THE COMPETITIVE STAGE

We encourage all our students to enter competitions to gain experience and demonstrate their talents – and we’ve had some prestigious winners too.

There are a wealth of opportunities to prove you’ve got what it takes out there, be it going head-to- head with your peers in national competitions or working with others to help them flourish in industry events.

TRACK, ROAD AND WATER Many sports students have scooped competitive honours with a helping hand from University College Birmingham. From budding British track star Jordan Broome, who represented GB in reaching the 2019 FISU World University Games 200m final, to fellow sports scholar and 2019 Royal Windsor sprint triathlon winner Kai Furnell-Brennan, as well as international canoe marathon medallist Ignacio Soler Fabre – all received individual support from our sports staff and facilities to help them on the way to sporting glory. And it’s not just about competing. Our students have also played their part in backing those participating in sporting events, putting their industry skills to the test by providing services such as sports therapy and massages at events from the London Marathon to Ride Across Britain and Velo Birmingham and Midlands.

CULINARY CHAMPS Teams from our celebrated College of Food and Hospitality Management have won the prestigious Nestle Toque d’Or Professional culinary contest a record five times. Our most recent winners in 2019 not only gained invaluable experience and an outstanding accolade, but were also rewarded with a gastronomic tour of Spain. Theirs is not the only success story – our young team of food scientists saw off the competition to win the first ever IFST University Food Challenge and we had dozens of medallists at the ABST baking competition, as well as awards at the International Young Chef Olympiad and UK Seafood Young Chef of the Year.

MAKE-UP MARVELS You might have seen super-talented and multi-award winning Specialist Hair and Media Make-up student Stephanie Harrison appear as a contestant in BBC talent show Glow Up: Britain’s Next Make-Up Star, fronted by Stacey Dooley MBE. Stephanie has won an impressive haul of awards in the past few years: the Warpaint Make-up Championships at Professional Beauty London, and in her first prosthetics competition at the National Make-Up Awards, she walked away with second and third prize for her WW2 Dunkirk soldier and Marvel character Groot. She’s far from alone either. We have a host of stars who have scooped a string of honours, from wins at the National Make-Up Awards to the AHT hair and make-up competition.

OUR STUDENTS James Whiting Founder of The Skinny Food Co Tourism Business Management BA (Hons) Zero calorie sauces and syrups may be a tempting diet option for many people. But for former student James Whiting, they’ve also been the heart of a remarkable adventure in business. James launched The Skinny Food Co in May 2018 and hasn’t looked back. In less than 18 months, more than 1.5 million of his ‘#NotGuilty’ sauces and syrups had been sold through the company’s website alone, while the brand had amassed hundreds of thousands of social media followers and is now being sold in the likes of Holland & Barrett, SPAR and by Amazon. After starting with a modest 1,000 sqft warehouse, the business was soon operating out of premises 10 times bigger. There’s much more to come too, with ambitions to amass an eight-figure turnover in the company’s third year. And having attracted advanced talks with even more major retailers both in the UK and abroad, The Skinny Food Co products could soon be flying off the shelves at a store near you. For James, it’s an enterprising journey which all started during his time as a Tourism Business Management student at University College Birmingham. “I believe I learned many skills during my studies which shaped me to be the person I am now,” he said. “I had countless opportunities to enhance my employability, which I grabbed with both hands. “The teaching was fantastic, and the courses were highly engaging and fun while developing my knowledge and skills. “Following my first job after finishing at the University, I started my own marketing company where I helped grow brands online,” he added. “Now I am marketing my own company and seeing great results from it!”
